Sambar
Deer
Sambar are the second largest deer in New Zealand.
Some males are known to weigh up to 300 kgs and can grow to
a height ranging from 135 - 150 cms at the shoulders. The
male members of this species have antlers that can grow to
a length of 90 - 95cms, with a record finding of one that
measured 127cms! They are extremely cunning and it is common
for a stag to lie in thick brush, and let a hunter walk right
by, moving off once the danger lessens. Sambar can be hunted
from April to November and carry strong 3x3 antlers.
